Best Time of Year to Hire a Campervan in Australia

Australia is huge, so the “best” time to hire a campervan depends on where you’re going. The short version: chase winter (the dry season) up north, and summer and the shoulder months down south. Get the timing right and you’ll score better weather, fewer crowds and lower prices. Here’s how the seasons work region by region, plus when to book.

North vs south: the golden rule

The north and south of Australia run on opposite seasons for travel. Northern tropical regions are best in the cooler, drier winter months, while southern regions shine in the warmer months. Trying to do both? Autumn and spring are the sweet spots that work almost everywhere.

Northern Australia: the dry season (May–October)

For the Top End (Darwin, Kakadu, Litchfield), the Kimberley (WA) and Tropical North Queensland (Cairns, Port Douglas, the Daintree), the dry season from roughly May to October is prime time: warm sunny days, cool nights, open roads and accessible gorges and waterfalls.

Avoid the wet season (November to April) up north if you can. It brings heavy monsoon rain, humidity, and flooded roads that can cut off access entirely, no fun in a motorhome. The dry season is also the busiest and priciest period up north, so book ahead.

Southern Australia: summer (December–February)

Down south, summer is beach and coast season. The Great Ocean Road, Margaret River, the South Australian coast and the NSW and Victorian coastlines are at their best for swimming and long daylight hours. It’s also the most popular and expensive time, overlapping with Christmas and school holidays.

Tasmania and the Red Centre

  • Tasmania: summer (Dec–Feb) is ideal for mild weather and open roads. Winter is cold but quiet and cheaper.
  • Red Centre (Uluru, Alice Springs): autumn to spring (roughly April–September) is most comfortable. Summer days are extremely hot; winter nights are cold but days are pleasant.
  • WA wildflowers: spring (roughly August–October) is spectacular across the southwest.

Shoulder seasons: often the smartest choice

Autumn (March–May) and spring (September–November) frequently offer the best all-round balance of mild weather, thinner crowds and better value. Autumn suits NSW and South Australia; spring is lovely in Victoria and unbeatable for WA’s wildflowers. If your dates are flexible, the shoulder seasons are hard to beat.

Events and peak periods to plan around

Demand (and price) spikes around:

  • Christmas and New Year (mid-December to late January) — the busiest and dearest window.
  • Easter and the April school holidays.
  • School holidays generally, which vary by state.
  • Major local events and festivals in your destination.

If you must travel in these windows, book early; vehicles sell out and rates climb.

Price patterns through the year

Across most brands, daily rates roughly follow this pattern: peak November–February plus Easter (highest), shoulder March–April and July–October (good value), and low season around May–June (cheapest, fewest crowds). The same camper can cost roughly twice as much in January as in June. Northern trips buck this a little, since the dry-season winter is both the best weather and the busiest time up top.

When should you book?

  • Peak summer, Easter and school holidays: book 3–6 months ahead for the best choice and price.
  • Dry-season north: book several months ahead; fleets are limited and demand is high.
  • Shoulder and low season: a few weeks can work, but booking early still saves money.

Whenever you travel, booking early almost always beats leaving it late.

What’s the cheapest time to hire a campervan in Australia?
Generally May to June (low season) for southern and east-coast trips, when demand drops and rates are at their lowest. Shoulder months are the next best value.
Can I visit northern Australia in the wet season?
You can, but it’s not ideal by campervan. Heavy rain and flooding can close roads and cut off access to top attractions. The dry season (May–October) is far better up north.
When is the best time for an east-coast road trip?
Autumn and spring are excellent for the NSW and Queensland coast, with warm days and fewer crowds. Winter suits Tropical North Queensland; summer is peak but busy.
How far ahead should I book for summer?
Three to six months ahead for peak summer, Easter and school holidays. Vehicles sell out and prices rise as the dates approach.
