One-Way Campervan Hire Australia

One-Way Campervan Hire Across Australia

A one-way campervan hire lets you pick up in one city and drop off in another, so you only ever drive forwards. No doubling back to where you started, no wasted days retracing the same highway. It is the smartest way to see a big chunk of Australia on a single trip, whether that is the East Coast run up to the reef or a cross-country crossing through the Red Centre.

At Travellers we are a hire comparison service, not a booking site. You tell us your trip, and a real person compares one-way availability across 100+ campervans and motorhomes from every major brand, including Apollo, Britz, Maui, Jucy, Cruisin’, Spaceships, Mighty and Go Cheap. Then we send you the best direct price, with no booking fees and no comparison-site markup on top.

Popular One-Way Routes

Some corridors are so well travelled that depots keep vehicles moving along them year-round, which usually means better one-way availability and fairer fees. The favourites are:

  • Sydney to Cairns (or Cairns to Sydney) — the classic East Coast adventure past Byron Bay, the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef. Allow 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Melbourne to Adelaide — the Great Ocean Road, the Twelve Apostles and the Limestone Coast in one easy westward run.
  • Brisbane to Cairns — tropical Queensland without the long drive north from New South Wales.
  • Sydney to Melbourne — the coastal Grand Pacific Drive and Sapphire Coast, or inland via the high country.
  • Adelaide to Alice Springs to Darwin — the Explorer’s Way through the outback, Uluru and Kakadu.
  • Perth to Broome — the Coral Coast, Ningaloo Reef and the Kimberley gateway.

One-Way and Relocation Fees

Because the depot has to get that vehicle back to its home base eventually, most one-way hires carry a one-way fee (sometimes called a relocation fee). As a rough guide it can range from around $150 on short, popular corridors to $500 or more on long or remote routes. On high-demand lanes at the right time of year, some brands waive it entirely.

The fee depends on the route, the direction of travel, the brand and the season. This is exactly where comparing pays off: for the same trip, one brand might charge a hefty one-way fee while another is running it for free to reposition stock. We check all of them so you do not have to.

Relocation Deals: One-Way from $1 a Day

If your dates are flexible, relocation deals are the bargain of the campervan world. When a company needs a vehicle moved from an over-stocked depot to one that is short, they offer it at a nominal rate, often from $1 per day, sometimes with a fuel allowance or a free night or two thrown in.

The trade-offs are real: you usually get a fixed route, a tight time window (commonly 3 to 7 days) and a daily kilometre allowance of around 100 to 160km. They appear and disappear fast. Tell us your preferred direction and rough dates and we will flag any live relocation deals that fit before they are gone.

Who One-Way Hire Suits

One-way works brilliantly for travellers flying into one city and out of another, backpackers working their way up or down the coast, and anyone who wants to cover serious ground without backtracking. If your flights are already booked into, say, Sydney and out of Cairns, a one-way camper is almost always the better fit than a return hire.

Tips for a Better One-Way Deal

  • Book early for peak (December to February and school holidays) when one-way stock is tightest.
  • Stay flexible on dates to unlock relocation deals and waived fees.
  • Travel the depot’s preferred direction — repositioning routes are cheaper than the popular tourist direction.
  • Check the kilometre allowance and inclusions, not just the headline daily rate.
  • Let us compare so you see every brand’s one-way fee side by side.
Is one-way campervan hire more expensive than return hire?
Often, yes, because of the one-way fee. But it saves you days of backtracking and fuel, and relocation deals can make it far cheaper than a return hire. We compare both so you can see the real cost.
Which one-way routes have the best availability?
High-traffic corridors like Sydney to Cairns, Brisbane to Cairns and Melbourne to Adelaide have the most vehicles moving, so better availability and often lower or waived fees.
What is a relocation deal?
It is a one-way hire where the company needs a vehicle repositioned and offers it cheap, often from $1 a day, with a fixed route and a short time window. Great value if your dates are flexible.
Can I do a one-way hire between Australia and New Zealand?
Not in the same vehicle, as there is water in between. But many brands operate in both countries, and we can help you arrange separate one-way hires on each side.
Do you charge a booking fee for finding a one-way deal?
No. Our comparison is free and we send you the brand’s direct price. You pay the hire company, not us, and there is no comparison-site markup.
