Tax Refunds
As a hard-working holidaymaker in Australia you will pay around 29% in tax! That’s almost one third of your beer budget down the dunny! Luckily however, if you meet certain criteria you could be classified as a ‘resident for tax purposes’ and have your tax recalculated. As a result you could qualify for a lower tax rate and claim a refund of the tax you have overpaid.
When should I claim my tax return? The tax year runs from July 1st to June 30th the following year. You can claim your tax return at the end of the tax year (July/Aug) and/or when you leave Australia permanently.
What documents do I need to claim my tax return? You will need a PAYG Payment Summary, which shows how much you earned during the financial year and how much tax has been deducted from your pay. Your employer should issue your Payment Summary within 14 days of the end of the financial year. However, if you are leaving before the end of a financial year, you may request the PAYG Summary statement from your employer upon termination of employment. Your employer has a legal obligation to supply this within 14-days.
If you are unable to obtain a PAYG Payment Summary you can use your Last Pay Slip or a Statement of Earnings Letter from your employer. Both documents must be accompanied by a Statutory Declaration Form signed by a Justice of the Peace, i.e Doctor, Post Officer, Teacher, Pharmacist.
How much can I claim back? TCP Travellers Refunds guarantees you’ll receive the maximum legal refund as fast as possible. The amount depends on factors like as your visa, your earnings and how long you have worked. We charge a 13.75% fee inc GST (Min $98 inc GST) which is deducted from your return, so there are no up-front or hidden costs. If you don’t qualify for a refund there’s no fee at all.
How do I qualify for a tax return? If you have lived and worked in Australia for at least six months and have stayed in shared accommodation or rented a flat / apartment during your stay then you may be classified as a resident for tax purposes.
