Work while you study in Australia

As an international student in Australia you can work up to 20 hours per week while while your course is in session. If you’re bringing your family with you, your dependants can also work up to 20 hours per week once you have started your course in Australia.

If you have started a course at the Masters or Doctorate level however, your dependents may work unlimited hours. If you or your dependents work in excess of these restrictions, your visas may be subject to cancellation.

To work in Australia you'll need to arrange the following:

Arrange your Australian Taxfile Number (TFN)
If you haven’t arranged your TFN within 28 days of starting work you will be taxed at 47% of your wages. Apply for your taxfile number online.

Set up an Australian Bank Account
You’re going to need an Australian bank account to find work, as employers won’t pay into your home (overseas) account. Set up your account before leaving home, transfer your funds, and then collect your ATM card once you arrive.

Get a Fixed Australian Mailing Address
Every international student in Australia needs a fixed Australian mailing address. Its essential to set up your Tax File Number, bank account and Medicare (if eligible) and a great way for family to send you letters and parcels.

Order an Australian Mobile Phone SIM and Number
Apply now and your mobile number will be sent to you via email within 48 hours. On arrival in Australia, simply collect your SIM and activate your service.
